The Future of Music Tech & AI — A Reality Check & Rehash As Of 2026

The music industry is no stranger to disruption. The leap from vinyl to tape to CD to mp3 to streaming was one thing, but now, AI is threatening to upend the very creative process that musicians and producers have built their careers and identities on. The question is no longer whether AI will shape music technology; in many ways, that ship has sailed. The question is whether human musicians, producers, and composers will still have a meaningful seat at the table, and how urgently we need to protect that seat.

Back in October 2024, I wrote a piece on this very publication outlining how to balance AI technology and human artistry by creating a space where artists could use AI tools to make music faster, better-sounding, more evocative, while keeping the human touch firmly intact. A lot has changed since then. The numbers are bigger, the lawsuits are louder, and the stakes are higher than most of us anticipated even eighteen months ago.
